I Thought Our Baby Would Save Our Relationship—Instead, My Gender Reveal Party Became the Day I Finally Walked Away
People like to say that love conquers everything.
I used to believe that.
Now I know something different.
Love can also become the reason people stay far longer than they should.
For more than five years, I loved Bob with every part of my heart.
Whenever he ignored me…
I forgave him.
Whenever he came home smelling like another woman’s perfume…
I convinced myself there had to be an innocent explanation.
Whenever he mocked me in front of other people…
I told myself he didn’t really mean it.
Because that’s what love does when it’s mixed with hope.
It teaches you to mistake patience for happiness.
Then one afternoon…
Everything changed.
I stared at two pink lines on a pregnancy test.
I couldn’t stop smiling.
A baby.
Our baby.
I was certain this would be the beginning of a new chapter.
Surely becoming a father would finally make Bob grow up.
I wrapped the pregnancy test inside a small gift box, cooked his favorite dinner, lit candles around the apartment, and waited for him to come home.
When he finally walked through the front door, he barely looked at the table.
« What’s all this? »
« I have a surprise. »
As I stepped closer to hug him, a familiar smell reached me.
Women’s perfume.
Again.
My heart sank.
« You smell different. »
He rolled his eyes.
« You’re imagining things. »
« I’m not. »
« You probably sprayed something on yourself. »
He said it so casually that I almost questioned my own instincts.
Almost.
Instead of arguing, I handed him the gift.
His face brightened.
« Fishing gear? »
« Open it. »
He lifted the lid.
Inside…
Lay the pregnancy test.
The smile vanished from his face.
« What is this? »
« We’re having a baby. »
For several seconds…
He simply stared.
Then he dropped the test onto the table as if it were something disgusting.
« Seriously? »
« You actually peed on this thing? »
I blinked.
« That’s your first reaction? »
He shrugged.
« I guess congratulations. »
Silence.
Then he looked directly at my stomach.
« I was wondering why you’ve been getting so fat. »
Every dream I’d imagined for that moment disappeared.
No tears.
No hug.
No excitement.
Only another insult.
Still…
I refused to give up hope.
Everyone always said men don’t truly become fathers until they hold their child for the first time.
Maybe that would be true for Bob.
Months passed.
Nothing changed.
He stayed out late.
The perfume never disappeared.
Sometimes there were lipstick stains on his shirts.
Whenever I asked questions…
He accused me of being jealous.
The only person who seemed genuinely excited about the pregnancy…
Was Michael.
Bob’s older brother.
The day he visited, he arrived carrying grocery bags filled with fresh fruit, vegetables, vitamins, and healthy snacks.
« I figured the baby deserves the best. »
I laughed.
« You really didn’t have to do all this. »
« I wanted to. »
Then he accidentally revealed something that left me speechless.
« I can’t believe Bob finally gets Grandma’s inheritance. »
« What inheritance? »
Michael frowned.
« You don’t know? »
I slowly shook my head.
« Our grandmother promised everything to whichever grandchild gives her the first great-grandchild. »
My smile faded.
Was that why Bob suddenly cared about the baby?
Michael seemed to realize he’d said too much.
« I’m sorry. »
« It’s okay. »
But deep inside…
A tiny seed of doubt had already begun to grow.
Later that week I had my very first ultrasound.
Bob claimed he was too busy.
Michael immediately offered to come instead.
When the baby’s heartbeat echoed through the examination room…
I couldn’t stop crying.
Then I glanced beside me.
Michael quietly wiped tears from his own eyes.
He smiled awkwardly when he noticed me looking.
« I don’t know why that got me. »
« It got me too. »
Afterward…
He took me to dinner.
Then drove me safely home.
That evening I proudly showed Bob the ultrasound pictures.
He barely glanced at them.
« You can’t even tell what you’re looking at. »
That was all he said.
Nothing more.
As my pregnancy progressed…
Michael somehow became more involved than the baby’s own father.
He helped carry groceries.
He checked whether I needed anything.
He remembered every doctor’s appointment.
Bob remembered almost nothing.
Whenever he commented on the pregnancy…
It was always about my appearance.
« You’ve really put on weight. »
« You should watch what you’re eating. »
« You don’t look like yourself anymore. »
Each comment hurt.
Each apology I accepted hurt even more.
When it came time to learn whether we were having a boy or a girl, I asked the doctor to seal the results inside an envelope.
« I want a gender reveal party. »
The doctor smiled.
« It’ll be a wonderful memory. »
I believed that too.
I just didn’t know…
Exactly how unforgettable that day would become.
